Safwan ibn ‘Assal reported:
I came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, while he was reclining in the mosque on his cloak. I said to him, “O Messenger of Allah, I have come to you seeking knowledge.” The Prophet said,
“Welcome, seeker of knowledge! The seeker of knowledge is surrounded by the angels and shaded under their wings, then some of them ride upward until they reach the lowest heaven due to their love for what he is seeking. What have you come to learn?”
I said, “O Messenger of Allah, we will continue to travel between Mecca and Medina, so what is the ruling on wiping over the socks?” The Prophet said, “It is three days for the traveler, and one day and one night for the resident.”
